UNLV Defeats KU With Walk-Off Home Run

UNLV’s Jaci Hull notched a two-run, walk-off home run to help the Rebels defeat Kansas 2-1 in the Jayhawks’ final contest of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

KU falls to 8-3 overall while UNLV improves with to an 8-1-1 mark.

KU’s one run was its lowest scoring output in a game this year as they were limited to just four hits during the contest.

Sophomore thrower Sarah Vertelka pitched a one-hitter through six innings and allowed UNLV only three hits and one walk the entire game and faced just 21 batters.

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas wasted no time getting on the scoreboard tallying a run in the top of the second. Freshman Brittany Hile reached base safely on a walk and moved over to second when junior Stevie Crisosto got to first safely on an error. Sophomore Ally Stanton advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt before Sara Ramirez, also a sophomore, singled to the shortstop to bring Hile across home plate, her fifth RBI of the season.

The run stood as they only score in the game until Hull sent a pitch deep to right field with a runner on first in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Kansas will return to action next weekend in the Houston Invitational, Feb. 22-24. KU will face TexasState and Centenary in day one of the tournament, Boston and Houston on Saturday and conclude the tournament with a contest with Cal State Northridge.
