Jayhawk Softball Travels To California For Cathedral City Classic

For its third tournament of the year, the Kansas softball team (4-5 overall) will head out west this weekend, Feb. 19-22, to participate in the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., hosted by Oregon State.

KU will go up against six opponents in four days. On Thursday, the Jayhawks open play with No. 21/20 North Carolina (8-2) and Oregon State (5-4). Then, on Friday and Saturday KU will take on BYU (6-5) and UC Santa Barbara (5-4) before playing No. 10/9 Cal (7-1) and Cal Poly (2-2) on Sunday to conclude the tournament.

About Kansas

After its second weekend of the 2009 season, the Kansas softball team is 4-5 overall, including a pair of wins against top 25 teams. KU went 2-3 in the UCF Early Bird Tournament last weekend picking up wins over Western Carolina and Bowling Green. Through 10 games, senior Val Chapple paces the squad with a .346 batting average and has not struck out yet this season. Sophomore Liz Kocon has batted in a team-high five runs. During the UCF tournament, senior Stevie Crisosto led the Jayhawks with a .400 average and three RBIs. Crisosto currently leads the Big 12 Conference with 10 walks. Senior Val George has been the team’s starter from the circle tossing 32.1 innings and earning 36 strikeouts in that time. She has gone 3-3 in six appearances with a 1.73 ERA. Junior Sarah Vertelka has thrown 13 innings and holds a 4.31 ERA in five appearances.

George’s One Hitter

Senior hurler Val George helped Kansas close out the UCF Early Bird Tournament with a victory last weekend after tossing a one-hitter against Bowling Green on Feb. 15. KU defeated the Falcons 9-0 in just five innings, while George struck out seven batters and walked two.

Crisosto Leads Big 12 In Walks

Through nine games, Kansas senior Stevie Crisosto leads the Big 12 Conference with 10 walks so far this season for 1.11 walks per game. In 2008, Crisosto finished sixth in the league with 34 bases on balls.

The Jayhawks are back in action Feb. 28-March 1 when they head to Denton, Texas for the North Texas Invite. KU will face North Texas and Harvard in the two day tournament.
