Jayhawks Finishes 10th at Tallahassee in Women's Golf
Feb. 17, 2013
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Kansas junior Meghan Potee shot a two-over par 74 and finished tied for 18th individually with a three-round score of 225 (+9) to lead KU at the inaugural Florida State Match-Up Women’s Golf Tournament at SouthWood Golf Club here Sunday.
Kansas, which finished 10th in the 12-team field, improved each round of the tournament shooting a 310 on Friday, a 306 on Saturday and a 305 on Sunday for a 921 (+57). Georgia overcame and eight-stroke deficit entering Sunday and shot a final round 287 (-1) to edge Oklahoma for the team title, 877 (+13) to 881 (+17). KU was three strokes behind ninth-place finisher Michigan, which had a three-round total 918 (+54).
“It was a great event to be able to compete against some of the top teams in the country,” Kansas head coach Erin O’Neil Miller said of KU’s first competition of the spring with its last tournament being in the last week of October. “You could definitely tell we had not played in a tournament in quite some time. We missed quite a few shots, especially in the putting game.”
Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia led every round and tied for the individual title with Erica Popson of Tennessee with a three-round 214 (-2). Popson entered the final round three strokes behind Lobato and shot a one-under 71 Sunday. Three other golfers – Laura Wearn of Furman, Jessica Negron of Florida State and Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma – finished tied for third shooting an even par (216) for the three-round event.
Potee’s +9 was one stroke better than KU junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn’s three-round 226, which tied for 26th individually. For the second straight day, Kawinpakorn shot the low round for the Jayhawks with an even-par 72 on Sunday, two strokes better than her 74 on Saturday. Kawinpakorn shot an opening round 80 on Friday.
“Meghan (Potee) had a great tournament finishing in the top 20. It was the best I have seen her hit the ball in a long time,” O’Neil Miller said. “Mook (Kawinpakorn) bounced back after a tough first round and played solid her last two days.”
Jayhawk freshman Thanuttra Boonraksasat finished tied for 45th with a 234 (+18), which included a 77 (+5) on Sunday. Sophomore Gabby DiMarco placed 57th with a 241 (+25), while sophomore Michelle Woods tied for 58th with a 244 (+28) in the 64-golfer field. DiMarco shot an 82 (+10) on Sunday and Woods an 87 (+15).
“We need more out of our 4-5 players,” O’Neil Miller said. “Our 1-through-3 were solid but we need more consistency in those four and five spots. Looking at the results, we could have definitely finished higher than we did. We did improve each round but we have the ability to play better. We’ll regroup and get ready for the next tournament.”
The unique match-up format of the tournament had each of the 12 participating teams paired with another team and playing with that common opponent over the first two days of the event. Georgia and Oklahoma led from start to finish, followed by Tennessee/Texas-San Antonio and Florida State/Texas A&M. Kansas and Furman placed fourth in the six-team match-up field.
KU will next compete at the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge in Weston, Fla., Feb. 25-26. The event is hosted by the University of Maryland.
