Jayhawks slip after day two in Miami

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. –

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas freshman Grace Thiry shot a 79 on day two of the Qdoba Invitational to drop to eighth place on Monday at Don Shula’s Golf Resort. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

After firing an opening-round one-under-par 71 on Sunday to enter today’s competition in a tie for first place, Thiry will now head into Tuesday’s third and final round in a tie for eighth place with a combined score of 150.

As a team, Kansas also dropped two places from Sunday’s leaderbaords and currently sits in seventh place with a team total of 621.

Kansas sophomore Emily Powers finished round two in a tie for 27th place after carding a second-round score 78 for a combined total of 153. Senior Annie Giangrosso repeated Sunday’s opening-round score of 79 to complete the day with a 158. The veteran Jayhawk will enter tomorrow’s final round in a tie for 39th place.

Freshman Meghna Bal and sophomore Meghan Gockel were the only two Jayhawks to improve in the second round from Sunday’s scores, dropping four strokes and two strokes, respectively. Bal sits in a tie for 45th place (82-78-160), while Gockel will enter into the third round in a tie for 52nd place with a combined total of 162.

Sophomore Camilla Svensson, who is competing unattached, fired a 79 to combine for a two-round score of 163, good enough for a tie in 54th place.

Current team leader East Carolina set the pace with a two-round score of 590, eight strokes ahead of runner-up Louisville (598), while the University of Miami is in third place with a team total of 599.

The Jayhawks will look to improve as they enter into Tuesday’s final round, set to begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
