Jayhawks Compete at Sooner Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Kansas track and field team competed at the Sooner Invitational Saturday. 11 Jayhawks made the trip for one final tune-up before next week’s Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lincoln, Neb.

Kansas dominated the men’s shot put taking the top two places. Junior Sheldon Battle won the event with a throw of 62-08.00, while sophomore Gavin Ball finished second in with a throw of 55-07.50.

Sophomore Charles Murphy set a new personal best as he finished third in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 22.21.

On the women’s side, junior Charisse Bacchus won the long jump with a season best jump of 19-09.75.

Senior Brooklyn Hann and freshman Crystal Manning finished two, three in the triple jump. Hann recorded a top jump of 41-06.00, while Manning had the best effort of her young career with a jump of 40-04.75.

Other notable finishes on the women’s side included sophomore Kara Euler’s third place finish in the 400-meter dash (58.75) and junior Jen Widerstrom’s fourth place finish in the weight throw (51-03.75).

“The athletes that traveled to Oklahoma turned in some very good performances,” Kansas head coach Stanley Redwine said. “Hopefully they can build on those performances next weekend at the conference meet.”

The Big 12 Championships will take place in Lincoln, Neb., next Friday and Saturday.
