Men's Golf Gives Back to the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence

Feb. 19, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The Boys & Girls Club of East Heights, located on 15th and Haskell, is the largest club in Lawrence serving over 220 kids from kindergarten to 6th grade. There are many dedicated volunteers who help the club run smoothly but when the Kansas men’s golf team, accompanied by head coach Kit Grove and assistant coach John Handrigan showed up on Thursday, they were eagerly greeted by the staff and immediately put to work.

The team was divided into several groups which included tutoring, computer class and dodgeball. Freshman David Catt helped a group of 5th grade students with their math homework while freshman Bryce Brown and junior Doug Quinones teamed up in the 1st grade classroom.

The highlight of the day was the dodgeball game that took place in the gym. The Jayhawks fired dodge balls at each other and playfully tossed them at the kids. Coach Grove and Coach Handrigan initially just watched the game, but were eventually coerced into to playing. The KU golfers certainly enjoyed getting to take some shots at their coaches.

The day ended with the team passing out snacks and helping the kids complete their homework. Some great memories were made by the 220 kids that regularly attend the Boys & Girls Club of East Heights and by the 10 members of the men’s golf team, who actively give back to the Lawrence community.
