GAINESVILLE, Fla. –

Senior Sara Ramirez hit her first home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning to push Kansas softball past Campbell 2-1 Saturday evening.

The win marked KU’s first victory of the Lipton Invitational is it improved to 3-5 overall. The Jayhawks play again Saturday night (tonight) at approximately 7:45 p.m. versus East Carolina.

Campbell, which fell to 1-6-1 overall, scored first putting a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff home run.

Kansas did not take long to respond scoring two runs on a homer of its own from Ramirez in the top of the fifth. It was the 11th round-tripper of her career. Ramirez plated freshman Alex Jones, who led off the inning on a single up the middle.

Jones finished with two hits in the contest along with fellow freshman Rosie Hull. Hull singled in her first at bat during the third inning to extend her hitting streak to six hits. Unfortunately, the lefty slapper grounded out in her next turn in the batter’s box but ended the night with a grounded to third base.

In addition to Jones, Hull and Ramirez, three additional Jayhawks notched a hit in the game to out-hit the Camels 8-5.

Jones pitched all seven innings moving to 2-2 from the circle as she tied a season high with five strike outs and allowed just one walk.

The Jayhawks had several opportunities to add more runs to the scoreboard but stranded three runners in the third inning and two in both the second and sixth frames. In all, Kansas stranded 11 runners in the game while the Camels left just two runners on base.
