Soccer America Names Sauer Freshman All-American

Feb. 21, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas soccer player Afton Sauer has been selected as a Freshman All-American in the February issue of Soccer America adding to an already impressive list of honors bestowed on the KU soccer program following the 2004 season. The honor is the second of its kind for Sauer following the 2004 season. Last month, she was selected as a third team Freshman All-American by SoccerBuzz magazine.

A freshman from Highlands Ranch, Colo., Sauer started all 23 matches on defense for the Jayhawks during the season and was a big part of the team’s defensive success, as KU surrendered only 13 goals all season and finished ninth in the country with a team goals against average of 0.55. In addition to her role on defense, Sauer chipped in two goals offensively, including the game-winner on Oct. 1 against Texas Tech.

The Big 12 Conference honored Sauer with second team All-Conference and All-Freshman team honors following the season and SoccerBuzz named her to the Central Region All-Freshman team.
