Seventeen KU Swimmers and Divers Named Academic All-Big 12

Feb. 23, 2005

DALLAS, Texas – Seventeen Jayhawk swimmers and divers were among the 60 student-athletes named to the 2005 Women’s Swimming and Diving Academic All-Big 12 team, the league office announced Tuesday. Kansas’ 17 honorees, 15 first-team selections and two second-team selections, were tops among all conference institutions.

The Jayhawks were led by senior Aly Colver, who was one of only two women student-athletes to record a 4.0 grade point average. This marks the third consecutive year the Holyoke, Colo., native has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 team.

“Each year, above our competitive goals, we set high academic goals for our team,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “When we have so many student-athletes on the team achieving that standard, it shows we are doing something well in the pool as well as out of the pool. Our program is very honored to have so many of our student-athletes selected to the Academic All-Big 12 team.”

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women’s swimming and diving academic all-league squad consisted of 60 first team members combined with 13 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation also are eligible.

Kansas will begin competition at the Big 12 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, today, Feb. 23, in College Station, Texas. The championships will be held from Feb. 23-26. Complete Kansas results can be found on the Kansas swimming and diving website following each day of competition.
