Swimming and Diving in Third After Big 12 Championship Day One

Feb. 23, 2005

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Kansas swimming and diving team is in third place after one day of competition at the 2005 Big 12 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. The Jayhawks recorded 64 team points and trail second-place Texas A&M by four points and first-place Texas by 16 points. Two events, the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay, took place on the first day of the four-day meet.

Three new Kansas records were set in the two relay events held on the first day of competition. Senior Amy Gruber, junior Lindsey Urbatchka and sophomores Hannah Bakke and Jenny Short teamed to finish third in the 200 medley relay with a Kansas record-setting time of 1:42.02. In the 800 freestyle relay, Gruber, senior Jackie Krueger, junior Gina Gnatzig and freshman Terri Schramka combined to finish third with another Kansas record-setting time of 7:17.91. Gruber completed the lead-off 200-yard leg of the relay in an NCAA `A’ standard and KU record-setting time of 1:47.01. The Bigelow, Ark., native’s time automatically qualifies her to compete in the 200 freestyle event at the NCAA Championships, March 17-19. She had previously qualified to compete in the 100 freestyle event earlier in the season.

“We really kicked off the 2005 Big 12 Championships in a great way,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “Both relays swam faster than any Kansas team ever has and we are really looking forward to next couple of days.”

The Jayhawks will compete at day two of the Big 12 Conference Championships, Thursday, Feb. 24, starting with the morning preliminary events at 10 a.m. in College Station, Texas.
