Feb. 23, 2013

MIAMI, Fla. – Kansas women’s golf will compete in its second event of the spring season at the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge at the Senator Course as Shula’s Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla., Feb. 25-26.

Kansas is one of 16 teams that will play on the par-72 course which will play 6,278 yards for the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge. Following a practice round on Sunday, Feb. 24, the tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday, Feb. 25 with the final 18 holes on Feb. 26.

“I think it will be a good course for us, layout-wise, and the weather looks to be great,” Kansas head coach Erin O’Neil said. “This is a good field that we can certainly have a good finish to get back on track like we did at the end of the fall, shooting right around 300 or better every time.”

Kansas is mixing up its lineup from last week’s FSU Match Up Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla., where the Jayhawks finished 10th out of 12 teams. KU juniors Meghan Potee and Yupaporn Kawinpakorn and freshman Thanuttra Boonraksasat return from last week’s event, while senior Audrey Yowell and sophomore transfer Minami Levonowich will be in the cast for the Miami tourney. Yowell played in all five fall 2012 events, while Levonowich transferred from Kennesaw State at the semester and will be competing in her first tournament for Kansas. Sophomore Gabby DiMarco also made the trip to Miami and will be playing as an individual. Her scores will not count in KU’s team totals.

“We’ll keep making changes until we find the right combination,” O’Neil said. “We need four scores in the 70s to be competitive. We decided to make a change and will see how the tournament goes and evaluate from there.”

Potee led KU at the FSU Match Up Invitational as she tied for 18th in the 64-player field with a three-round 225 (+9). Potee is third on the team in scoring average in 2012-13 at 75.9 strokes per 18 holes. Kawinpakorn leads KU with a 74.7 average and tied for 26th in last week’s event with a 226 (+10), one stroke behind Potee. Boonraksasat joins Kawinpakorn and Potee as KU’s top three golfers in 2012-13. She is second on the team with a 75.0 scoring average per 18 holes. Yowell averaged 77.1 in her five fall events, while DiMarco takes a 77.4 stroke average to Miami.
