WILMINGTON, N.C. – A parade of doubles in the fourth inning backed by a complete game from junior Morgan Druhan fueled a 5-1 victory against Gardner-Webb to wrap up day one of the Seahawk Classic hosted by UNC Wilmington, Friday afternoon.

Kansas (9-2) stayed patient at the plate as the Jayhawks were nearly through the order twice before breaking out for a four-run fourth inning. KU strung together a list of doubles from junior Rosie Hull, freshman Lexi Bryant and junior Mariah Montgomery to spark the big inning. Junior Maggie Hullalso chipped in when she took one for the team with the bases loaded.

By the end of the fourth, the Jayhawks would have all they needed as Druhan (2-0) went the distance in the circle for her second complete game of the season. The junior transfer allowed two walks and struck out six while the only run she allowed came via a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.

After posting the four-spot in the fourth, Rosie Hullbeat out an infield single and would come around to score on a sac bunt from Bryant, giving the Jayhawks an extra insurance run in the top of the fifth. The run proved handy when first baseman Morgan Baker homered for Gardner-Webb in the bottom half of the inning.

Bryant, who did not start at catcher for the first time this season during the first game of the day, came out firing. Aside from her RBI double in the fourth, Bryant was throwing bullets from behind the plate. She picked off a runner in the fourth and caught a runner stealing in the bottom of the sixth – her fifth in the Jayhawks’ first 11 games.

Two more strikeouts for Druhan ended the sixth, while the Jayhawk defense shook off a leadoff double by Gardner-Webb in the bottom of the seventh. Junior left fielder Maggie Hull and sophomore centerfielder Elsa Moyertracked down three-consecutive fly balls to end the game.
