Jayhawks Shut Out Kent State, 4-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –

The Kansas defense was errorless and senior ace Kassie Humphreys threw a one-hitter as the Jayhawks defeated <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>KentState, 4-0, in the final game of the Red and Black Tournament Sunday at Ulmer Stadium. With the victory, KU moved to 2-2 on the week and 7-5-1 overall.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Humphreys (6-1) struck out eight and walked four in the complete-game shutout. KentState starter Kylie Reynolds was also impressive in the circle, posting a school-record 17 strikeouts, giving up four hits and walking one the seven-inning effort.

Sophomore Elle Pottorf notched her first home run of the season, while freshman Sara Ramirez hit her fourth double of the season. Sophomore Val Chapple and Humphreys each turned in base hits in the win.

Reynolds (2-1) struck out 11 of 12 Jayhawk batters through the first four innings. However, Pottorf broke up the no-hitter in the top of the fifth with a solo shot to left to put KU on the board. Chapple reached on an error by the second baseman, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Humphreys. The Jayhawks are now 7-0 this season when scoring first.

KU added to its lead in the top of the seventh with two runs on a pair of hits, a walk and an error. Freshman Amanda Jobe walked and came all the way around to score on a base hit by Chapple and an error by the right fielder. Ramirez doubled down the left line to score Chapple and pick up her sixth RBI of the season.

KU continues its string of 18 consecutive road games Friday at the Great Western Downtown Plaza Classic in Tulsa, Okla. The Jayhawks will face IowaState, Tulsa and North Texas in the three-day event at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
