Swimming and Diving in Third After Big 12 Championship Day Three

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Kansas swimming and diving team is in third place after three days of competition at the Big 12 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. The Jayhawks have recorded 328 team points and trail second-place Texas A&M which currently has 531 points. Texas is in first place with 624 team points.

“We got a lot better tonight,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “We had outstanding performances from everyone. We just have to keep it rolling tomorrow in order to maintain our team position.”

Senior Amy Gruber once again provided the top performance of the day for the Jayhawks. The senior co-captain finished second in the 100 butterfly with an NCAA `A’ standard time of 53.59. The Bigelow, Ark., native has now qualified to compete in the NCAA Championships, March 17-19, in the 100 and 200 freestyle events and the 100 butterfly. She also teamed with senior Jackie Krueger, junior Lindsey Urbatchka and freshman Terri Schramka to finish third in the 200 freestyle relay in a Kansas season-best time of 1:32.96.

In the 200 freestyle individual event, junior Gina Gnatzig finished sixth overall with a time of 1:50.11, and Schramka finished ninth overall as she won the consolation final in a time of 1:49.66. Sophomore Hannah Bakke finished sixth (1:03.32) and senior Miranda Isaac finished seventh (1:03.83) in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Jenny Short finished fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.39. On the one-meter diving board, sophomore Jenny Roberts was the top Jayhawk as she finished eighth with a score of 228.05.

“We are going to have to swim well in tomorrow’s preliminaries, so we can come back at night and swim for team points,” Campbell added. “So far are having a great meet.”

The Jayhawks will compete in the final day of the Big 12 Championships, Saturday, starting with the morning preliminary events at 10 a.m. in College Station, Texas.
