Jayhawks Finish Seventh at Chrysler Challenge

The KU women’s golf team shot 316 (323-328-316–967) in the final round of the Chrysler Challenge Monday to finish in seventh place at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort (par-71, 6,095 yards).

Host school <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Florida State took the team crown, in the 10-team field, with a final score of 895 (303-298-294–895), 24 strokes in front of second place North Carolina (314-307-298–919).

Senior Amanda Costner carded a four-over par 75 in the final round, the best one-round score of the Jayhawks at the tournament, to tie for 22nd place. Costner finished with a three-round score of 238 (79-84-75–238). Freshman Camilla Svensson also tied for 22nd place with a final score of 238 after recording a final round score of 78 (77-83-78–238).

Junior Annie Giangrosso shot 81 in the final round for a three-round score of 248 to tie for 42nd place, and freshman Emily Powers carded an 82 (81-85-82–248) to also tie for 42nd place. Freshman Meghan Gockel recorded an 86 in the final round (87-80-86–253) to tie for 49th place.

“We played better, and finished on a good note,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “The conditions were easier, and I was happy to get three days in. The short games hurt us, but it is our plan, for the next two weeks, to sharpen things up.”

Florida State’s Caroline Westrup carded a three-under par 68 in the final round to take the individual crown. Westrup finished with a final score of 215 (74-73-68–215).

The Jayhawks next compete when they travel to Austin, Texas, March 16-18, for the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
