Kansas claims third in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. – Kansas sophomore Emily Powers secured her tie for second-place to help the Jayhawks finish in the top three after the second and final round of the Kitahara Invitational, Tuesday. The Quincy, Ill., native fired a 73 at Fresno State’s Copper River Country Club, posting a one-over-par total score of 145.

After leading the tournament at the end of day one with 295, Kansas slipped two notches in the team leaderboard, carding a 301 on the last 18 holes for a combined total 596, good enough for third place.

Tulsa improved from Monday’s opening round by nine strokes (299-290) to claim tournament honors with a composite team score of 589. Taylor Siebert of tournament host, Fresno State, won the individual title with a birdie on the 18th hole to finish with an even-par 144.

Although Kansas freshman, Meghna Bal, set the pace after Monday’s first round with a sub-par 71, the New Delhi, India native slipped in the individual standings Tuesday, carding a 78 to tie for 13th place with a final score of 149 (+5). Fellow freshman Grace Thiry fired consecutive rounds of 75 to tie for 20th place with a 150 (+6), rounding out the three Jayhawks to finish in the top-20.

Kansas senior Annie Giangrosso improved four strokes in round two, carding a 75 on the day to tie for 37th place with 154 (+10), while sophomore Meghan Gockel posted a final score of 159 (+15) to tie for 57th place.

Redshirt freshman Sydney Wilson, who was competing unattached, completed her spring season debut with a 14-over-par 158, besting her first round score by six strokes (82-76).

The Jayhawks will next look to travel to Austin, Texas, where Big 12 foe, the University of Texas, will play host at the Betsy Rawls Invitational, March 17-19.
