Kansas Rowing Boathouse Dedication to be Held on Saturday

Feb. 26, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan.—On Saturday, Feb. 28, the Kansas rowing team will dedicate the new Kansas Rowing Boathouse at 1:30 p.m. at Burcham Park. The dedication takes place during a three-hour open house from 1-4 p.m. and coincides with Kansas’ 40-year anniversary of women’s sports.

Rowers will be on hand to give tours of the six million dollar facility. The dedication will include words from director of athletics Lew Perkins, Chancellor Robert Hemenway, Lawrence mayor Michael Dever and rowing head coach Rob Catloth.

“People should come out. It’s a very beautiful building that fits nicely into the setting at Burcham Park,” said Catloth. “The boathouse is going to be a great asset to the program and the community.”

The Jayhawks moved into the new facility on Feb. 6. According to senior rower Emily Martin, the boathouse has already affected the team’s attitude.

“Our team has been in it for a few weeks now and it has really changed our whole team spirit and our team atmosphere,” Martin said. “It really gives us a home. You feel a lot better about going to practice. You feel a lot better about your sport. You feel better about your facilities. It makes workouts better. There is a much higher morale.”
