Kansas Tennis Travels to New Mexico State and UTEP

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas tennis continues its road stretch this weekend when it travels to New Mexico State on Saturday, Feb. 27 and UTEP on Sunday, Feb. 28. Match play is slated to begin at 10 a.m. both days.

KU returns to the court after a tough loss against No. 34 Tulsa on Sunday. The Jayhawks enter the match 3-3 on the season.

Junior Maria Martinez and sophomore Erin Wilbert lead Kansas in singles play with winning records. Martinez recorded the only singles win against Tulsa last weekend.

In doubles play, Wilbert and freshman Vika Khanevskaya lead the Jayhawks in doubles play with a 3-1 record.

New Mexico State enters this weekend’s matches with a 3-4 record. The Aggies are lead by junior Isabela Kulaif, who earned the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 15-21. The Jayhawks own a 3-0 advantage with the Aggies, but have not faced them since February 19, 1989.

UTEP enters this weekend’s matches with a 6-3 record and is riding a five-match winning streak. The KU-UTEP series dates back to 1987 with the Jayhawks leading the series 3-0. Last year, Kansas hosted the Miners for its season-opener and defeated UTEP 4-3.

Kansas continues match play next weekend when it travels to Tulane on Saturday and New Orleans on Sunday. Match play begins at noon both days.
