Seven Jayhawks combined for nine hits and took advantage of 13 walks as the University of Kansas softball team shut out MoreheadState 14-0 in five innings Saturday morning to start day two of the UNCG Spartan Classic.

KU, which is seeded second, improved to 12-1 overall and will face third-seeded MoreheadState (4-8) again Saturday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m. Central.

Sophomore Mariah Montgomery led the Jayhawks with three RBIs. Juniors Marissa Ingle and Liz Kocon as well as freshman Laura Vickers each drove in two runs. Kocon led Kansas with three bases on balls, while four additional Jayhawks also collected multiple walks.

Freshman pitcher Kristin Martinez improved to 5-0 from the circle tossing the first four innings and allowing just two hits and one walk. Junior transfer Ashley Spencer tossed the final frame in hitless relief and also recorded a strikeout.

Kansas opened the game scoring four runs in the top of the first inning with the help of a two-run triple from Vickers. It marked the team’s first triple this season.

The Jayhawks kept the offense rolling with two more runs in the second before pulling the game well out of reach with five runs in the third frame. KU scored its five tallies on just one hit but benefitted from five walks as KU batted through the order and increased its lead to 11-0.

Three more runs scored in the top of the fifth from Ingle’s bases loaded walk and Montgomery’s single down the right field line, which drove in a pair of runs.
