Kansas Finishes Ninth at the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge in Miami

Feb. 26, 2013

MIAMI, Fla. – Freshman Yupaporn Kawinpakorn finished tied for 12th to lead the Kansas women’s golf team at the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge at the Senator Course as Shula’s Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla., Tuesday.

After entering the day in third place at +21 (292-305–597), Kansas shot a final round 321 (+33) to finish tied for nine with a three-round 918 (+54) on the par-72 course which measured 6,278 yards. The Jayhawks finished tied with Missouri, while North Carolina State won the event with a three-round 874 (+10), including a 4-under 284 on Tuesday. Florida International placed runner-up with a three-round 886 (+22). Kansas was one stroke from eighth-place Xavier (917) and four shots behind seventh-place Mercer (912).

“Obviously we were where we wanted to be going into the day but we just did not handle ourselves like we needed to,” Kansas head coach Erin O’Neil said. “There is definitely some good there that we showed from yesterday; we just need to fine tune some things to get more comfortable with being more competitive while playing in those top spots. I think we were protecting today, trying to guard. It was a windy day and anytime you try to protect with wind, you won’t play very well.”

After entering the final round tied for third at even par, Kawinpakorn shot an 81 (+9) Tuesday and finished with a three-round 225 (+9), which tied her for 12th in the 93-individual field. Juniors Meghan Potee and Thanuttra Boonraksasat and sophomore Minami Minami Levonowich each shot and 80 (+8) on Tuesday with Potee placing tied for 21st with a three-round 227 (+11), Boonraksasat tied for 66th at 239 (+23) and Levonowich tied for 35th at 230 (+14). It was Levonowich’s first competition as a Jayhawk as she transferred from Kennesaw State after the fall semester. Senior Audrey Yowell shot an 83 Tuesday and placed tied for 75th with a three-round 245 (+29).

KU sophomore Gabby DiMarco, who played as an individual at the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge, had the low round of the day for the Jayhawks with a 1-over 73. She ended the event tied for 45th with a three-round 233 (83-77-73) and improved each round at the event.

Kansas will next be in action at the Notre Dame Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz., March 8-10.
