KU Tennis Defeated By Utah, 5-2

The University of Kansas tennis team was defeated by the Utah Utes, 5-2, Sunday, at the Wood Valley Racquet Club in Topeka, Kan. The loss drops the team to 1-7 on the season.
KU started the day off hot by winning two of the three doubles matches to secure the first point of the day. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Brittany Brown and freshman Lauren Hommell downed Utah’s Elizabeth Ferris and Allison Hansen in a highly competitive match, 9-7. In No. 3 doubles, junior Luiza Loureiro and freshman Elizaveta Avdeeva defeated Utah’s Cinthia Saucedo and Cheyenne Reveche, 8-5.
The `Hawks only managed to win one of the six singles matches as Avdeeva earned a straight-set victory over Whitney Eber, 7-5, 6-1, in No. 2 singles. In No. 1 singles action, junior Christine Skoda was downed by Ferris, 6-2, 6-4.
“I thought that Liza (Avdeeva) competed at a high level and I was pleased with her performance,” KU head coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “We came out strong in doubles, but we committed to many errors in singles play.”
The `Hawks will next head to Iowa for matches against Big 12 foe Iowa State and the University of Iowa on March 5 and 6, respectively.
