AUSTIN, Texas – KU co-captains Lauren Bonfe and Danielle Herrmann led the Kansas 200-yard medley relay to a second-place, all-time record-breaking finish in the first event of the 2008 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship meet Wednesday in Austin. The Jayhawks kicked off the four-day competition with finals of the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays. Kansas stands in a three-way tie for second place with Missouri and Texas (64 points) following day-one competition.
Opening the 2008 Big 12 meet with a silver medal were 200-yard medley relay members Bonfe, Herrmann, Ashley Leidigh and Maria Mayrovich. The four Jayhawks raced to the fastest time in school history, finishing second with a record-breaking time of 1:40.44, out-touching the third-place Texas Longhorns by nearly a half second. The relay broke the Kansas all-time record of 1:41.01, set by last year’s Big 12 200 medley relay team and posted an NCAA consideration time.
Finishing third in their heat of the 200 medley relay, swimmers Whitney Taylor, Joy Bunting, Brittany Potter and Amanda Maez stacked the depth for the `Hawks with a time of 1:45 20.
In 800-yard freestyle action, the team of Mayrovich, Emily Lanteigne, Terri Schramka and Carrah Haley finished finals fourth with a time of 7:21.88.
“This was a really good way to open the Big 12 meet,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “Our 200 medley relay set a school record by a lot and it was a really solid first swim. Our 800 free relay was not quite where we needed it to be, but overall, it was a great swim.”
Preliminaries of individual and diving events begin Thursday morning (10 a.m.) with the following events:
500-yard freestyle
200-yard individual medley
50-yard freestyle
1m diving
Finals of all four, in addition to finals of the 400-yard medley relay, begin at 6 p.m. Complete results following Big 12 action can be found on kuathletics.com.
