AUSTIN, Texas – The 800-yard freestyle relay team gave the Kansas swimming and diving team 30 points on the first day of the 2013 Big 12 Championships, Wednesday night at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center. After the Jayhawks top 200-yard medley relay team was disqualified in the first event of the evening, the 800-yard freestyle relay team (freshman Haley Molden, junior Morgan Sharp, senior Brooke Brull and sophomore Deanna Marks) picked up a fourth-place finish (7:20.10), knocking 11 seconds from their previous season-best time, to get the team on the scoreboard after the conclusion of the first two events of the Big 12 Championship. “We had an early take off, which happens when you are going off of a teammate sometimes,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. “(The 800-yard freestyle relay team) came out and performed pretty well. The first night there is always nerves and you have to get into the flow of the meet. It wasn’t exactly the start that we wanted, but we are a resilient team and I’m sure we will come back ready to go tomorrow.” The Jayhawks 30 points place them in fifth place behind Texas (80), West Virginia (68), TCU (62) and Iowa State (60) heading into day two of the championships. “We need to come in tomorrow and get a good warm-up in and just do what we have been working on all year,” Campbell said. “We need to continue to focus on celebrating the season and focusing when we need to and finishing our races. We’ll be okay, we just need to come back and step up a little bit more tomorrow.” The Jayhawks will be back in the pool tomorrow morning for day two of the Big 12 Championships, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. The order of events is as follows: Preliminaries (10 a.m.) 500-yard freestyle 200-yard IM 50-yard freestyle One-meter diving (1 p.m.) Finals (6 p.m.) 500-yard freestyle 200-yard IM 200-yard freestyle relay 50-yard freestyle One-meter diving 400-yard medley relay KUAthletics.com: The official online source for Kansas Athletics, Williams Education Fund contributions, tickets, merchandise, multimedia, photos and much, much more.
