LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas swimming and diving team landed a Big 12-best 16 honorees on the 2013 Big 12 Academic First and Second Teams, announced by the conference office Tuesday.
The team’s 16 honorees tied Iowa State for the most in the Big 12 and is the most by a Kansas team since 2009 when 18 Jayhawks where honored. Eight student-athletes received First Team honors (3.2-4.0 GPA) and eight more were placed on the Second Team (3.0-3.19).
“This success is a credit to our student-athletes hard work in the classroom,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. “Laura Jacobsen, our academic advisor, sets high expectations and our team achieves those standards.”;
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
This is the third-straight spring at least 13 members of the KU swimming and diving team were recognized for their performance outside of the pool.
The Jayhawks are currently competing in the Big 12 Championships, Feb. 27-March 2, in Austin, Texas, where they are looking to improve on their fourth-place finish from a year ago.
