Jayhawks Achieve Fourth-Place Finish at Big 12 Championships

Junior Iuliia Kuzhil broke yet again another Kansas record to lead the Kansas Swimming and Diving team to a fourth place finish at the Big 12 Championships in College Station, Texas on Saturday. Kuzhil’s 1:54.76 time in the 200-yard backstroke broke her previous record of 1:58.05, set during last year’s Big 12 Championships.

Sophomore Abigail Anderson also made her mark in Kansas history, puttingherself in fourth place in Kansas’ all-time swimming records with a time of 1:58.76 in the 200-yard backstroke.

In the 100-yard freestyle, freshman Monica Johannessen and senior Emily Lanteigne recorded ninth and 12th place finishes respectively.

Junior Joy Bunting registered a time of 2:16.93 in the 200-yard breastroke to break her previous career-best time of 2:17.94.

The Championships continued with the 1650 yard freestyle where freshman Rebecca Swank recorded a seventh-place finish and sophomore Shannon Garlie finished in eighth place.

Sophomore Stephanie Payne led the Jayhawks in the 200-yard butterfly with a ninth-place finish. Junior Brittany Potter recorded an 11th-place finish and sophomore Kath Liggett achieved a personal-best time and 14th-place finish.

In the diving session, senior Meghan Proehl broke a personal-best score of 200.25 to finish in eighth-place with a score of 212.05.

The Jayhawks finished the day and the Big 12 Championships with a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:22.43.
