Sutherland Shines on Senior Night

In her final game at Allen Fieldhouse, senior Aishah Sutherland put up a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds as the University of Kansas women’s basketball team fell in the final seconds to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, 66-63, Wednesday night.

The Jayhawks dropped to 18-11 overall and 7-10 in the Big 12 while the Cowgirls went to 15-11 overall and 7-10 in conference play.

With 1:16 left, and with OSU holding a one-point advantage, forward Chelsea Gardner hit a guarded layup to beat the shot clock and put the Jayhawks up by one, 61-60. On a night with 22 lead changes, the Cowgirls made a quick lay-up on the other end to take advantage with just 50.4 seconds to go.

After being fouled by OSU guard Tiffany Bias, junior guard Angel Goodrich connected on both free throws to once again put Kansas on top. On the other end, Gardner got called for the foul on Bias and the Cowgirl sophomore put away two free throws, making the score 64-63, OSU, with 26.3 ticks left on the clock. Kansas sophomore CeCe Harper, who tied a career-high with 10 points on the night, immediately committed two desperation fouls to put Bias back at the line with 9.5 seconds to play. Bias drained both to end the game at 66-63.

Sutherland was joined in double-digit scoring by Harper and by the freshman, Gardner, who each put up 10 points apiece. Goodrich also recorded a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

Kansas’ lone senior showed hustle on both ends of the court early, scoring four points within the first five minutes and grabbing a key defensive rebound that led to a three from freshman Natalie Knight, putting the Jayhawks up 7-2.

By the 10:45 mark in the opening period, Oklahoma State had gained control of the lead, 17-15. The two teams would battle over every possession throughout the rest of the half before OSU would ultimately take a 35-32 advantage into the break.

The Jayhawks relied on a balanced attack in the opening period, with six players getting on the board. Gardner led the Crimson and Blue with eight points and four rebounds. Goodrich contributed with four points and six of her career-high 11 rebounds before the second half.

Sutherland came out of the locker room hot, scoring KU’s first six points of the second frame and leading Kansas to a 40-39 lead with 15:40 to play. After OSU notched a jumper out of a timeout, Goodrich recorded an old-fashioned three-point play to spark a 10-0 run from the Jayhawks, making it 50-41 with 13:42 remaining and forcing the Cowgirls to call a timeout. KU shot 85.7 percent from the charity stripe, including a perfect 6-of-6 in the first period.

OSU mounted a 12-0 run of their own to switch advantage once again. Sutherland broke the run with back-to-back jumpers, making it 54-53, KU, with 6:19 to play in the game. Momentum once again switched to OSU with back-to-back shots from Oklahoma State’s Bias before the Cowgirls eventually claimed the win.

KU returns to the road for its final Big 12 regular-season game on Sunday, March 4 as the Jayhawks travel to Norman, Okla., to take on the Oklahoma Sooners. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
