Earle Mosley Joins Jayhawk Football Staff

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Earle Mosley has been named assistant football coach at the University of Kansas, Head Coach Mark Mangino announced Tuesday. Mosley, who has experience at both the NFL and collegiate levels, joins the Kansas staff after serving five seasons as an assistant football coach with the Chicago Bears. He will coach the team’s running backs.
“Earle brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program,” Mangino said. “His work ethic and attention to detail are widely recognized in college coaching circles. He is a great addition to our staff.”
With the Chicago Bears, Mosley coached the running backs from 1999 to 2003. Under Mosley’s tutelage in 2001, Bears running back Anthony Thomas broke the club’s rookie rushing record by gaining 1,183 yards en route to NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors — the first time a Bears player had won the award since former KU great Gale Sayers earned the distinction in 1965.
Prior to his appointment with the Bears, Mosley was an assistant coach at the collegiate level, serving on staffs at Stanford (1997-98), Notre Dame (1992-96), Temple (1988-92), Northwestern (1984-88), Rutgers (1980-83) and West Chester University (1979). During his time as an assistant, Mosley worked for some of the best head coaches in the business, including Lou Holtz (at Notre Dame), Dennis Green (at Northwestern) and Tyrone Willingham (at Stanford).
While at Notre Dame, Mosley coached three 1,000-yard rushers in the school’s storied history: Reggie Brooks, Lee Becton and Autry Denson. He also coached future NFL star Jerome Bettis while with the Fighting Irish.
At Rutgers, Mosley coached former Kansas City Chiefs defensive back and five time All-Pro selection, Deron Cherry.
During his time as an assistant coach, Mosley has received numerous awards. While at Northwestern in 1985, he was given the Delaware County Coaches Association “Appreciation Award” for service and support. At Rutgers in 1983, he was given the Washington D.C. Coaches Association “Appreciation Award” for service and support of their All-Star football clinic.
Mosley earned a bachelor of science degree from West Chester University where he was a three-year letterwinner on the football field for the Golden Rams. As a senior, Mosely was a team captain and was a first-team All-Pennsylvania Conference selection at defensive back. He was inducted into the Dr. W. Glenn Killinger Foundation West Chester University Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
Mosley spent two years as a member of the United States Army and served one tour of duty in Vietnam with the 1st Air Calvary Division Battalion, 1st of the 5th Charlie Company.
Mosley received his first head coaching position in 1975 at Chester (Pa.) High School. During his time at CHS, he was named Coach of the Year by the Delaware County Daily Times.
