DENTON, Texas –

After combining for four runs in two games during the first day of the North Texas Invite Saturday, the Kansas softball team unloaded for 10 runs en route to its 10-1, five-inning victory over Harvard Sunday afternoon to conclude the tournament.

Nine different Jayhawks combined for a season-high 13 hits and four stolen bases in the contest as KU improved to 7-11 overall, while Harvard dropped to 1-2.

Seniors Val Chapple and Elle Pottorf along with sophomores Allie Clark and Liz Kocon tallied two hits a piece. Chapple and sophomore Brittany Hile each recorded home runs to bat in 4 and 2 RBIs, respectively.

KU quickly put runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning taking a 7-0 lead over the Crimson.

Kocon led off the inning with a single towards the shortstop but the throw got by the first baseman giving Kocon time to advance to second. Clark then batted in Kocon with a line drive double down the left field line.

Hile and Chapple then added three-run homers bringing the Jayhawk run total up to seven.

KU tacked on three more runs in the third inning. Dougie McCaulley brought in a run on a sacrifice fly, Chapple added her fourth RBI of the day with a double to center field and Elle Pottorf batted in one more with a grounder up the middle.

Val George pitched her seventh complete game of the season as she improved to 6-5. The senior hurler fanned five batters and allowed five hits and no earned runs in the win.

In addition to the offensive outburst, George and the Jayhawks also made some great defensive plays on the day. George worked KU out of a bases loaded jam in the opening frame with a strikeout to end the inning. McCaulley made a diving catch in shallow center field to prevent a hit in the third and Chapple made the game-ending catch in the fifth inning leaving three Harvard runners on base.

KU will open its 21-game home season next weekend when it hosts the KU Invitational, March 6-8, at Arrocha Ballpark. Eastern Illinois, Northern Iowa and North Dakota State will all participate in the three-day tournament.
