Bonds Receives USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

March 1, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

After an outstanding year both on and off the course, Kansas senior Lauren Bonds was named to the Division I Cross Country All-Academic list, announced Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

This prestigious list honors student-athletes who finished among the top 15 at their respective NCAA regional meet and carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average.

Bonds, a native of Hutchinson, Kan., has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.93 in political science. In addition to the USTFCCA recognition, Bonds is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree and was a member of the 2008-09 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team. Upon graduation from KU in May 2010, Bonds will continue her education at Duke University, where she has been accepted into law school.

Her success in the classroom is certainly matched by her success on the course. During the 2009 season, Bonds became the first Kansas female athlete to compete at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships since 1994. She earned her ticket to Terre Haute after racing to an impressive fifth-place finish at the Midwest Regional Championships in Springfield, Mo. She recorded a personal-best 6K time of 20:49.10 at the meet, earning All-Region honors for her effort.

Bonds led the Jayhawks in every meet of the 2009 season, including a stellar performance at the Big 12 Championships, where she finished 10th overall to claim All-Big 12 honors for the second year in a row. Behind Bonds’ leadership, the women’s team finished fifth in the league race, which was its best showing since the establishment of the Big 12 Conference in 1996.

In addition to Bonds, 14 other runners from the Big 12 Conference were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic list, while Angela Bizzarri of Illinois was honored as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
