SMS Defeats Jayhawks, 8-4

LAWRENCE, Kan. –
The University of Kansas baseball team dropped its first midweek game of the season on Tuesday, falling to Southwest Missouri State 8-4 at Hoglund Ballpark. The loss brings the Jayhawks overall record to 12-5 this season.
SMS (2-5) took an early lead in the contest, plating three runs in the top of the second inning. The first two batters of the frame reached off of KU starter Mike Zagurski on a walk and an error. Both were able to come around to score on RBI singles later in the inning.
The Jayhawks got on the board in the bottom of the second inning as senior catcher Sean Richardson singled to lead off the inning and scored on an error later in the frame.
Kansas used six pitchers on the afternoon and allowed only one earned run on eight hits. Junior pitcher Don Czyz posted his longest outing of the season, allowing no hits and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings of work out of the KU bullpen. Zagurski (3-1) picked up his first loss of the season, allowing three runs, only one earned, in two innings of work.

Junior outfielder Gus Milner sliced into the Bears lead with a three-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning. A single off the bat of John Allman and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the ‘Hawks with only one out. Following a strikeout by junior first baseman Jared Schweitzer, Milner delivered plating the three runs and getting KU back into the ball game.
The Bears regained control of the game with a three-run double of their own in the top of the sixth. An error, a single and a base on balls loaded the bases for SMS one out. Junior center fielder Jacob Hilgendorf came to the plate and a pitch from KU reliever Andrew Rebar into right center field to plate all three runners and give SMS the winning margin of 8-4.
Kansas baseball takes the road this weekend to participate in the NBC Classic in Starkville, Miss. The Jayhawks will take on both No. 17/19 Mississippi State and Austin Peay twice at the tournament.
