Danielle McCray Named Phillips 66 Big 12 Player Of The Week

March 2, 2009

IRVING, Texas – University of Kansas junior guard-forward Danielle McCray was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while Sydney Carter (Texas A&M) was selected Freshman of the Week by a media voting panel for games of Feb. 23-March 1. McCray and Carter were both honored for the second time this season.

An Olathe, Kan., native, McCray averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead Kansas to wins over Oklahoma State and Nebraska last week and has helped the Jayhawks to their first three-game winning streak in league play since the 1999-2000 season.

McCray, who was recently named to the Naismith Award Midseason List, tied her career-high with 30 points at OSU off of 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. She also connected on 9-of-10 from the foul line as Kansas snapped a 14-game road losing streak in Big 12 play. McCray pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and also had two assists. She followed that performance with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists in the Jayhawks’ win over Nebraska.

McCray was also honored by the league on Dec. 8. She is the first Kansas player to earn the honor two times in one season since Crystal Kemp was a two-time winner during the 2005-06 season.

The Jayhawks (16-11, 5-9 Big 12) will return to action on Wednesday, March 4, when they welcome #5 Baylor to Allen Fieldhouse for “Senior Night.” Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
