KU Falls to Tulsa 1-0 in Final Game of Classic

After scoring 33 runs in the first four games of the 2007 Great Western Downtown Plaza Classic, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas softball lost a 1-0 decision to tournament host Tulsa Sunday afternoon at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. With the loss, the Jayhawks moved to 11-6-1 overall and finish second place in the tourney with a 4-1 record.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The Golden Hurricane scored the only run of the game off an error in the top of the fourth. Stephanie Chomicki singled up the middle and junior Betsy Wilson misplayed the ball, allowing it to roll to the warning track while Chomicki advanced to third. With one out, Sara Dyer notched an RBI base hit to center to score Chomicki (unearned) and put TU up 1-0.

KU had ample opportunities to score, stranding 11 on base in the seven frames, including seven runners in scoring position. Senior Nicole Washburn (2-for-4) and sophomore Val Chapple (2-for-3) led the Jayhawks’ offensive charge. Freshman Sara Ramirez also added a hit to bring KU’s game total to five.

Senior ace Kassie Humphreys (7-2) struck out nine, walked two and allowed just three hits to take the tough seven-inning loss. TU’s Jackie Lawrence (5-2) fanned five batters, walked three and gave up all five hits in the first five innings to take the win. Julie Fennell struck out five Jayhawks and walked two in the final two frames for her first save of the season.

After playing 18 straight road contests, KU returns to Lawrence Friday for the home-opening 2007 Jayhawk Invitational. The Jayhawks start off against Drake at 2 p.m. and will play five games in the three-day tournament at Arrocha Ballpark.
