About Kansas

Coming off a 2-3 weekend during the UTC Frost Classic, Kansas is 7-8 overall heading into the Coach B Classic. Freshman Alex Jones continues to lead the Jayhawks with a .423 batting average, which ranks 10th in the Big 12 Conference, while her team-high 22 hits rank second. Senior Sara Ramirez ranks second in the league with six home runs, including three in her last five games. Jones also has a team-best 3.76 ERA, while senior pitcher Sarah Vertelka has three of the team’s seven victories and has seen the most time from the pitcher’s circle with 37.1 innings of work.

Round Trip Ticket for Ramirez

At just 5-foot-1, Sara Ramirez does not look like your typical power hitter but the senior infielder currently ranks second in the Big 12 Conference with six home runs so far this season. Ramirez also holds the No. 9 spot on KU’s career home runs list with 16. She needs one more to tie for the No. 7 spot along with current Jayhawk Amanda Jobe and former player Elle Pottorf (2005, 07-09).

Familiar Faces

Some may notice a couple of familiar faces across the diamond this weekend as two former Kansas softball assistant coaches currently serve as assistants for two of KU’s opponents. Jen Sewell, who was on staff with the Jayhawks from 2004-08, is in her second season at Southern Illinois. SIUE assistant coach Buddy Foster served as an associate head coach at Kansas in 2009.

Up Next

The Jayhawks will play their 2010 home opener next weekend, March 11-13, when they host the KU Invitational. Kansas opens the tournament on Thursday with a 4 p.m. game versus Valparaiso. On Friday and Saturday, the Jayhawks will play both Valparaiso and Missouri State in one contest each day.
