Kansas Soccer Heads to Nebraska for Spring Match Action

March 4, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas soccer will open its spring 2011 exhibition season when the Jayhawks travel to Nebraska Saturday, for a 2 p.m., match at the Nebraska Soccer Field in Lincoln.

The match will be the first of six this spring, with the opener being KU’s only road contest. The other five will all be held throughout the month of April at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex, and will include an alumni match and a match against the University of Kansas men’s club team. The team will also host the Big 12/Big 10 Spring Challenge, which will feature Big 12 foe Iowa State as well as Big 10 opponents Iowa and Minnesota.

The Jayhawks, who finished 6-13 in the 2010 season, return three of their top six scoring leaders, including forward Kortney Clifton, who led the squad with four goals and an assist (nine points) in her junior season. Also headlining will be Whitney Berry, who wrapped up her sophomore campaign with three goals and three assists to tie Clifton for a team-leading nine points.

A total of six starters return, with newcomers Shannon Renner, Liana Salazar and Brittany King joining the mix. King, a defender out of Edmond, Okla., transferred to Kansas prior to the 2010 season but redshirted due to injury. Renner is a local product out of nearby Overland Park and spent her freshman season as a starter for Northern Illinois. Salazar comes to KU after spending the last few seasons playing at the international level for Colombia. Both King and Renner will be sophomores in the fall, while Salazar will be eligible as a freshman.
