Geubelle Takes First, Simpson Second in Long Jump at Arkansas Last Chance

March 4, 2011

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –

Kansas Sophomore Andrea Geubelle took first place in the women’s long jump Friday afternoon at the Arkansas Last Chance Meet in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Geubelle jumped a distance of 6.18m (20-03.50ft.) on her fourth attempt, her longest of the season. Fellow sophomore Francine Simpson also had a top jump of 6.18m (20-03.50ft.) but finished second because her next best jump was shorter than Geubelle’s. The mark was Simpson’s second best of the season. Unfortunately, Geubelle and Simpson’s jumps were just eight inches shy of the qualifying mark for the NCAA National Championships to be held next weekend. Sophomore Rebecca Neville and Junior Jamaica Collins also competed in the event, with Neville placing fourth on a jump of 5.73m (18-09.75ft.) and Collins placing seventh with a mark of 5.20m (17-00.75ft.), her best of the season.

Neville also took part in the 60-meter hurdles Friday evening. She finished fifth in the prelims, setting a personal best with a time of 8.76. In the finals she took sixth, crossing the finish line in 8.87.

In the women’s pole vault, Senior Jaci Perryman was looking to improve upon her solid fourth place finish last week at the Big 12 Championships. On Friday afternoon Perryman finished third after clearing a height of 3.96m (12-11.75ft.). Junior Julia Cummings also placed in the event, recording her best vault of the season at 3.86m (12-08.00ft.), finishing sixth. In the men’s pole vault, freshman Alex Bishop finished fifth after a top jump of 4.94m (16-02.50ft).

In the men’s long jump, Junior Darryl Trotter set a personal best in route to a seventh place finish. Trotter hit a distance of 6.85m (22-05.75ft.) on his final attempt. The jump was KU’s second best of the season. Trotter also competed in the triple jump, notching a sixth place finish on a jump of 14.10m (46-03.75ft.).

On Saturday, more Jayhawks will be in action and looking to qualify for the Indoor National Championships next week in College Station, Texas. Some members are in South Bend, Ind. for the Alex Wilson Last Chance Meet, while others are in Ames, Iowa for the ISU NCAA Qualifier.
