Jayhawks Grab Game One of Doubleheader Against Iowa

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

T.J. Walz yielded just fours hits and two walks over eight innings to lead the Kansas baseball team to an 8-1 victory over Iowa in game one of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark. Kansas improves to 5-2 on the season, while Iowa drops to 3-3.

The Hawkeyes were able to get on the scoreboard first in the second inning by taking advantage of a Brandon Macias throwing error to score an unearned run.

The Jayhawks responded with two runs of their own in the bottom portion of the second inning to take a lead they would never relinquish. Jason Brunansky ripped a double down the left field line to score Jake Marasco and then Chris Manship scored on a sacrifice fly by Casey Lytle for the second tally.

KU was able to break the game open in the fifth inning with three runs. Brunansky opened the frame with a double, his second hit en route to three total in game one. Brunansky has six hits in his last eight at-bats.

Marasco, Robby Price, and Jimmy Waters each added two hits and two runs to the offensive effort for the Jayhawks.

Walz struck out seven batters on his way to his second victory of the season. Walz’s earned run average stands at 1.29 after Friday’s game.

The Jayhawks and Hawkeyes will begin the second game of the doubleheader at 4:15 CST at Hoglund Ballpark.
