Kansas Soccer Edged 4-3 by Nebraska in Spring Exhibition Opener

March 5, 2011

LINCOLN, Neb. – Freshman forward Caroline Kastor scored twice and newcomer Shannon Renner also added in a goal for Kansas women’s soccer Saturday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field, but the Cornhuskers topped the Jayhawks’ three-goal output by one for the 4-3 win.

“We played well,” said head coach Mark Francis. “We have a lot of new people in the back, as we graduated three of our starters, so it will take some more practice to tighten things up.”

Newcomers Renner and Liana Salazar played a big role in the game for KU, with Salazar, a center-midfielder, assisting in Renner’s goal and Kastor’s first goal.

Kastor put Kansas on the board scoring on a corner kick from Salazar. Renner then found net with a through-ball from Salazar. Kastor closed out the day when she intercepted a pass from a Nebraska defender and beat the goalkeeper 1-on-1.

Now 0-1 for the spring exhibition season, KU will next play Central Missouri April 2, at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
