Women's Tennis Battles, Falls, 4-3, to No. 61 BYU

In its first outdoor match of the season, the Kansas women’s tennis team couldn’t overcome a 4-0 deficit to lose, 4-3, to No. 61 BYU at First Serve Tennis Center Friday afternoon.

The doubles tandems of Yuliana Svistun/Kunigunda Dorn and Erin Wilbert/Alessandra Dzuba each battled deficits in their matches, but couldn’t come all the way back, losing 8-4. Despite Edina Horvath and Ekaterina Morozova’s victory at the No. 1 doubles position, 8-4, KU surrendered the team doubles point and entered singles action down, 1-0.

Maria Martinez, playing at the No. 5, finished first, falling to Megan Price, 4-6, 3-6. Horvath lost to BYU’s No. 1 player, McCall Jones, 1-6, 4-6, shortly after. At the No. 3 position, 6-7 (5), 1-6, to give BYU the winning fourth team point.

The Jayhawks swept the three remaining singles matches to bring the final score to 4-3. Morozova defeated the No. 118-ranked Kristina Doerr in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, while Svistun and Wilbert each won tiebreakers against their opponents.

Kansas takes on No. 32 Tulsa on Saturday in the second of its weekend duals at First Serve. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
