Jayhawks Atop Leaderboard after Day One at Rio Verde

RIO VERDE, Ariz. — Four top-ten performances by KU golfers on Friday helped the Jayhawks climb to the top of the leader board after day one at the Duramed Collegiate Invitational at Rio Verde. Led by a one-over-par 72 from freshman Kalynd Carson, the team shot a 294 to take a 10 stroke lead over second place Toledo.

Carson, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, is tied for first place in the individual standings with Toledo’s Michelle Hui. Three other Jayhawks – juniors Meghan Gockel (73, T3) and Emily Powers (74, T5) and sophomore Sydney Wilson (75, T8) also finished in the top ten. Rounding out the lineup for KU was sophomore Meghna Bal (78, T31).

The combined score of 294 was the lowest round of the season for the Jayhawks, with their previous low coming at the Johnie Imes Invitational (301) in September.

The Duramed Collegiate Invitational will continue throughout the weekend, with another 18 holes to be played both Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring of the event can be found at golfstat.com.
