Kansas Tennis Wins Third Straight With 4-3 Victory Over Saint Louis

March 6, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

A freshman won the clincher for Kansas tennis for the second time in as many matches, as Dylan Windom’s three-set battle took the fourth and final point for the Jayhawks Saturday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center, in KU’s 4-3 win over Saint Louis.

Kansas improved to 5-4 this season, and continued its seven-match streak against Billikens, who are now 6-5. KU is a perfect 7-0 all-time against Saint Louis.

The match was won after Windom won an extremely close third set against Stephanie Hollis. Windom defeated Hollis 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in the No. 4 match.

The Jayhawks started off with a lead after winning the doubles point. The point was awarded to the Jayhawks after a tight No. 3 match.

Amy Barnthouse and Erin Wilbert fell in the No. 2 doubles spot, but Ekaterina Morozova and Windom downed Jenny Nalepa and Kasia Tomalak 8-3 in the No. 1 match to even things up.

A tense back-and-forth battle ensued in the third match, but KU’s Victoria Khanevskaya and Paulina Los overtook Mia Elmore and Hollis for the 8-5 win and a 1-0 Kansas lead.

In singles action, the Jayhawks started off strong with four players winning their first sets. Los continued her stellar weekend with an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory over Miller in No. 2 singles, and Khanevskaya defated Mia 6-3, 6-2 to give Kansas a 3-1 lead.

But the Billikens began to rally for a comeback late. After Hollis came back to defeat Windom 5-7 in the second set and force a third, Barnthouse dropped the No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-1 against Tomalak.

Morozova was up by one match against Hailee Elmore, the 20th-ranked player in the Central Region, but Hailee took sets two and three from Morozova for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win, tying the score at 3-3 and it was then up to the freshman Windom, who gutted out the key win for Kansas.

KU will close out non-conference play Wednesday afternoon, against local foe UMKC, 3 p.m., at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The match will be the Jayhawks’ final non-conference match, as well as the end of the seven-straight played at home.
