Freshman Kristin Martinez pitched seven scoreless innings while junior Marissa Ingle hit her second grand slam of the season as the University of Kansas softball team shut out San Diego 7-0 Sunday afternoon in its final game of the UNLV Eller Media Stadium Classic.

With the win, KU improved to 17-3 overall, including 3-2 during the UNLV tournament. The Tereros fell to 5-5 on the season.

Martinez pitched her second solo shutout of the season as she moved to 9-1 and improved her ERA to a team-best 1.80. The 5-foot-4 lefty held USD to four hits while the KU defense helped strand seven San Diego base runners during the game.

Ingle put the Jayhawks on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a grand slam, KU’s second-straight game with a grand slam and fifth of the season, over the left field wall to give KU a 4-0 lead after its first hit of the game. Kansas loaded the bases in the inning with a hit by pitch and back-to-back walks.

Kansas recorded its second hit of the game in the third inning, another home run, this time from sophomore Mariah Montgomery to right field to bring home two runs. It marked Montgomery’s sixth homer this season.

Junior Liz Kocon added one last run for the Jayhawks in the fifth inning when her single through the right side scored freshman Ashley Newman from second base.

Kansas is back in action next weekend when it returns to the state of Florida for the third time this season traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., March 11-13 for the North Florida Tournament.
