Jayhawks Make Annual Journey to Compete in the Cajun Classic

March 7, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The Kansas men’s golf team will travel to Lafayette, La. to make their 12th consecutive appearance at the Cajun Classic. The event will be conducted at Oakbourne Country Club (par-72, 7,002 yards) March 10-11.

“Obviously we are just excited to get out of the snow and get the chance to play some golf,” said head coach Kit Grove. “It makes it real tough when you don’t have the chance to practice much, but hopefully when we get back from this trip we will have more chances to practice.”

The Jayhawks will try to improve on their 10th place finish at the event a year ago. Former Jayhawk Gary Woodland won medalist honors at last year’s event with a three-round score of 205. Woodland’s 205 marks the top-54 hole score in event history.

The Jayhawks will be led by their sensational freshmen duo of Nate Barbee and Brad Hopfinger. Barbee was the top Jayhawk finisher at the All-American Golf Classic finishing tied for 20th place, while Hopfinger leads the team in scoring average with an average of 74.06.

Junior Walt Koelbel will continue his streak of competiting in all tournaments of the year next week and will try to improve upon his 59th-place finish at the All-American Golf Classic. He will be joined by sophomore Bobby Knowles and junior Zach Pederson to round out the lineup.

Junior Brandon Hermreck will compete in the event as an individual. Hermreck tied for 29th place at the All-American in his Jayhawk debut.

The event will consist of 36 holes being completed on Monday, March 11, followed by the final round on Tuesday, March 12.
