Jayhawk Tennis Drops Second-Straight Match to Ranked Opponent

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

On a windy day at First Serve Tennis Center, the Kansas women’s tennis team dropped its second match of the weekend to No. 32 Tulsa, 6-1.

The loss evened Kansas’ record at 5-5 on the season while Tulsa improved to 14-3.

After taking early leads at both the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions, the new pairings of Svistun/Dzuba and Wilbert/Dorn both fell, 8-5 and 8-6. Horvath and Dorn played at the No. 1 position again, but lost to Barriga and Marcinkowska, 8-5.

Entering singles play needing four team points, the Jayhawks came out fighting. Erin Wilbert finished first at the No. 6 position, dispatching her opponent, 6-2, 6-1. Maria Martinez followed with a loss (4-6, 1-6) to make the team score 2-1 in favor of Tulsa. Yuliana Svistun battled to three sets at the No. 4, but she and the three remaining Jayhawks dropped singles matches to decide the dual, 6-1.

Kansas opens Big 12 Conference play next Friday, March 13, when it travels to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at the Nebraska Tennis Center. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
