Kansas Golf Extends Lead at Rio Verde

March 7, 2009

RIO VERDE, Ariz. — For the second day in a row the Kansas women’s golf team sits atop the leader board at the Duramed Collegiate Invitational at Rio Verde. The Jayhawks shot a 295 Saturday to extend their lead to 20 strokes heading into Sunday’s final round.

Three Jayhawk golfers finished among the top ten individuals Saturday, led by junior Meghan Gockel, whose three-over-par 145 is good for first overall. Sophomore Sydney Wilson shot a 73 on Saturday and is tied for fifth with a 148. Junior Emily Powers is tied for eighth place overall with a score of 149. Rounding out the lineup for the Jayhawks were freshman Kalynd Carson (152, t20) and sophomore Meghna Bal (153, t27).

“I am really proud of how we handled everything today,” said head coach Erin O’Neil. “It is tough to play with the lead, but we played well and held on to it. Meghan (Gockel) and Sydney (Wilson) really stepped up today and helped us out.”

Kansas is looking for its first tournament title since October of 2007 when they won the Marilynn Smith Invitational.

Tee time for Sunday’s final round is set for 8 a.m. Live scoring of the Duramed Collegiate Invitational can be found at golfstat.com. Check back to kuathletics.com for complete coverage and results of the final round.
