Bal, Powers Help Kansas Finish Fifth at Duramed/Rio Verde Collegiate

RIO VERDE, Ariz. – Senior Emily Powers fired a team-best 77 in the final round of play as she helped lead the Jayhawks to a fifth-place finish at the Duramed/Rio Verde Collegiate on Sunday. Kansas recorded a third round score of 317 to bring its tournament total to 917.

Michigan took the tournament title and led through all three rounds. Michigan is the first team to win the event twice. A final round of 303 brought Michigan’s final score to 881. Host-school Western Michigan finished the event in ninth place, with a team total of 931 after three days of play

Powers’ last round gave her a final score of 231 as she tied for 21st. Junior Meghna Bal led the team and ended the event with a 229 (74-76-79—229) to place in a tie for 15th. Junior Grace Thiry tied for 28th as she shot an 85 to bring her three-day total to 233. Junior Jennifer Clark and senior Meghan Gockel each tied for 37th with scores of 235 and final rounds of 85 and 78 respectively.

Ashley Bauer of Michigan took home medalist honors as she chipped in a final round of 73 for a total of four-under par 209, the new tournament record for lowest three-round total. In addition, Bauer’s nine-stroke margin of victory is the largest in tournament history. Bauer is the third golfer from Michigan to win the event (Laurin Olin, 2005; Amy Schmucker 2006).

The Jayhawks will return to action when they travel to Florence, Ariz., to compete in the Northern Michigan Migrational March 15-17.
