Carolyn Davis Named First Team All-Big 12

March 7, 2011

IRVING, Texas – Kansas sophomore forward Carolyn Davis was named First Team All-Big 12 as announced by the conference office Monday morning. The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league’s head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

“We are excited for Carolyn to be recognized on the First Team,” said Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson. “To do it in what is considered to be the best conference in the nation is a tremendous accomplishment. She had a fantastic season and played some of her best games in conference play.”

Davis leads the Jayhawks with 18.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game on the season. She ranks third in the conference in scoring and eight in rebounding, while leading the league in field goal percentage at 66.4 percent. Davis also ranks second nationally in field goal percentage. She also ranks in the top 10 in the conference in blocks (1.4) and offensive rebounds (3.1).

The Houston, Texas, native recorded three 30-point games during conference play including a career-high 36 points in KU’s win over Nebraska on Feb. 26. She also scored 34 points in guiding Kansas to an overtime win over No. 20 Iowa State, a game in which she scored the game winning basket with under two seconds to play in the extra session.

“I am really honored to be named First Team,” said Davis. “I could not be where I am without the help of my teammates and coaches. They do a great job of feeding me the ball and putting me in situations to be successful. The Big 12 is full of talented players and I am thrilled to recognized among them.”

Davis, who tallied six double-doubles on the season, was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Feb. 21. She is the fourth player under Henrickson to be honored by the league coaches joining Danielle McCray (1st Team 2009, 2nd Team 2010), Shaquina Mosley (2nd Team 2007) and Crystal Kemp (1st Team, 2006). Davis was named to the 2010 Big 12 All-Freshman team last season and earned Preseason Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors.

Kansas (19-9, 6-10 Big 12) will take on Colorado (15-14, 6-10 Big 12) in the opening round of play at the 2011 Big 12 Championship at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Jayhawks defeated the Buffaloes twice during regular season conference play. The winner will face top-seeded Baylor on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
