Jayhawks Continue Spring Campaign at Louisiana Classics

March 8, 2009

LAFAYETTE, La. –

The Kansas Men’s Golf team resumes its spring season after a month layoff March 9-10 at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club (par-72, 7,141 yards). The Jayhawks have competed in the event for the last 12 years and tied for 10th place at last year’s event.

“This is a really neat event that we always look forward to playing in,” said head coach Kit Grove. “The course is an old, traditional layout with very small greens.”

For the first time all year, Grove has altered his starting lineup. Grove has inserted senior Zach Pederson and junior Bobby Knowles into the lineup looking to reignite the Jayhawks early season successes.

“We started out real strong in the fall and I’m turning to Zach and Bobby to use their experience and kick start things again.”

Along with Pederson and Knowles, the Jayhawks lineup will be rounded out with senior Walt Koelbel, sophomore Nate Barbee and freshman Ian Anson.

Koelbel, Barbee and Anson have competed in all five events so far this year. Koelbel is the top returning finisher from the 2008 Louisiana Classics when he finished tied for 28th place.

The 15-team event includes fellow Big 12 school Colorado, as well as Kansas City based UMKC.

The tournament, which is hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette, is a 54-hole event with 36 holes being played on March 9, followed by the final round on March 10.
