KU Tennis Sweeps UMKC 7-0

LAWRENCE, Kan. –
Kansas tennis recorded its first sweep of the season with a 7-0 downing of local foe UMKC, Wednesday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
The Jayhawks played strong from start to finish, beginning the match with a 2-for-3 performance in doubles.
Paulina Los and Victoria Khanevskaya easily downed Jessica Ball and Gabby Pintos 8-1 in third singles to start the Jayhawks off with a win. Ekaterina Morozova and Dylan Windom then took the doubles point for KU in first-singles with an 8-5 victory.
Laura Bouet and Suzan Lisenby was the only UMKC team to earn a doubles win, taking it down to the wire defeating Amy Barnthouse and Erin Wilbert 9-7 in No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Los extended her win streak to four with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Bouet in No. 2 singles. Khanevskaya easily disposed of Jillian Yakomich in the No. 5 spot, going 6-3, 6-0. Morozova followed with another easy win over Eva Dalvai at the top of the order, which clinched the match for KU.
After Windom downed Lisenby in the No. 4 position, Wilbert fought off Chelsea Horner in the second set of the No. 3 singles match. Wilbert nearly blanked Horner in the first set winning 6-1 and pulled out to a 4-0 lead in the second. However, Horner threatened Wilbert’s lead by winning two games. After Wilbert won another, Horner came right back, making the score 5-4. But the KU junior prevailed in the next game, giving the Jayhawks their sixth point of the day.
In the final singles match, Barnthouse went up by one set before Ball fought back in the second. The two battled back and forth with Ball forcing a tiebreaker. But Barnthouse never trailed in the tiebreaker, winning it 6-3, capturing the sixth-singles match with a 6-0, 7-6 (3) victory.
The Kangaroos dropped to 2-8 on the season and Kansas moved to 6-4, and has now won four straight going into Big 12 Conference play next weekend. The Jayhawks will go on a short hiatus before traveling to Lubbock, Texas, next Friday to open league action against Texas Tech March 18.
