Jayhawk Softball Hosts KU Invitational in Home Opener

After 19-straight games on the road, the Kansas softball team (9-10) will open its 2010 home slate this weekend, March 11-13, in the KU Invitational at Arrocha Ballpark. The Jayhawks will face Valparaiso (12-4) and Missouri State (2-9) during the three-day tournament.

Fans can purchase a single day pass for $8 (youth and senior citizens $5, children four and under free) or an all-tournament pass for $15. About Kansas

Kansas went 2-2 in the Coach B Classic last weekend and is 9-10 heading into its home opening weekend. The Jayhawk freshman class members continue to be large contributors to the team this season as four of KU’s top hitters are newcomers led by Alex Jones (.407 batting average, 24 hits). Senior Sara Ramirez has served as Kansas’ power hitter and leads the team with six home runs and 15 RBIs. Junior Brittany Hile (.235) has recently stepped up her offensive play raising her batting average over 50 points following last weekend’s 5-for-12 performance. The Jayhawks’ three pitchers have split time from the circle and all have three wins each. Junior Allie Clark owns a team-best 3.32 ERA.

– Arrocha Ballpark opened on March 6, 2004.

– Kansas is 63-35-1 at Arrocha Ballpark, including 42-12-1 in non-conference action.

– KU has won all six of its home openers at Arrocha Ballpark.

Clark Cracks Career Chart

Junior Allie Clark became the second Jayhawk this season to crack the top 10 of Kansas’ career home run list. The 6-0 pitcher launched her fourth homer of the season versus SIUE last Sunday to bring her career total up to 15. She is tied for the No. 10 spot with former players Nettie Fierros (2003-06) and Tracy Bunge (1983-86).

Following its brief stay home, Kansas softball will hit the road again March 18-20 in the San Diego Classic. KU then opens Big 12 Conference play March 27-28 at Texas A&M.
