Nugent Leads Kansas After Day One at Rio Verde
March 9, 2012
RIO VERDE, Ariz. – Senior Katy Nugent fired a five-over par 76 in the first round of the Rio Verde Invitational Friday to help Kansas finish in sixth place after day one. Nugent is currently tied for eighth and sits just five strokes away from the tournament leader, Ryann White of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
“It was pretty windy today and my short game was really solid,” Nugent said. “I didn’t hit very many greens, so that was big for me. Hopefully tomorrow I can hit more greens and have some good birdie opportunities.”
Kansas shot a 312 as a team and is seven strokes behind first-place Akron. Nugent’s not sure what the weather will hold for the Jayhawks on Saturday because of the unexpected wind Friday.
“It wasn’t forecasted to be windy today,” Nugent said. “It’s still blowing pretty hard right now so I don’t know what we should expect weather-wise tomorrow.”
The wind didn’t seem to be too much of a problem for the Jayhawks in the first round as sophomores Thanuttra Boonraksasat and Meghan Potee both carded seven-over par 78 and sit in a tie for 21st place. Junior Audrey Yowell is currently in a tie for 38th, finishing with an 80 while freshman Nadia Luttner came in with an 81, putting her in a tie for 48th.
The Jayhawks will continue play in Rio Verde Saturday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
